The sky is falling, the sky is falling….

We had all just climbed into bed to get an early night before a long day of travel the next day when ‘c-r-a-ckkk’ went something overhead followed by the sound of gushing water. It took only a few seconds to realise that water was flowing out of the laundry and flooding our apartment with hot water… in fact, a major water pipe had burst in the ceiling somewhere and was gushing in (our own little version of Niagara Falls meets the tale of Henny Penny!). Luckily we had pretty much packed up our bags ready for departure the next morning as it was a mad scramble to get dressed, scoop up our belongings and evacuate the room. In a matter of about 5 minutes the entire unit was flooded and we had lost electricity…

Mr Safety (aka Bryn) flew into action, responding to the emergency packing bags, hauling them down the corridor – it was all very exciting. Khi went down to notify the front desk but the receptionist told him to wait his turn (bet they regretted that in hindsight!) With water still pouring in through the roof, now flooding out into the corridor, a maintenance guy turned up with a mop and bucket to ‘clean up’ – upon seeing the deluge he simply starting laughing and called for backup – the second person turned up with a small wet-dry vac who again started laughing when they saw the extent of the situation and how inadequate the equipment would be! Quickly the solution moved from ‘mop up’ to stopping the water flow which seemed like forever before they managed. Eventually another person turned up with a super-size wet-dry vac to commence the cleanup, with another person trying to contact the rooms around us to evacuate them…

We were eventually located to a new room several floors away (and on the other side of the building) – which was a whole lot bigger than our original room (sort of made me wish that this emergency had occurred a little earlier on in our stay!!!). Such excitement, and what a memory and story to tell!
